The collection comprises measured drawings, documents, photography and microform produced by architectural practice RMJM (Robert Matthew Johnson Marshall).
The collection relates mainly to construction projects that the company was involved with in England between 1959 and 1985. Each project was allocated a unique 'job number' and these appear throughout the collection. The earliest projects represented are the Commonwealth Institute, Kensington and Chelsea, London (job 510) and New Zealand House, Westminster, London (job 10). The best represented projects are University of York (job 555) and University of Bath (job 567): both developments that used prefabricated steel frame building technology developed by the Consortium of Local Authorities Special Programme (CLASP). Documents and drawings relating to CLASP prefabrication appear in the collection. The last project fully recorded in the collection is Chelmsford College of Further Education, Essex (job 1039).
Unusual projects include: the redevelopment of HM Prison Holloway, London (job 640); urban transit systems for London (Cabtrack) (job 626) and Sheffield (Minitram) (job 693); the development of the Royal Mint site, Tower Hamlets, London (including plans drawn by the Ministry of Works) (job 871); and entertainment complexes Preston Guildhall, Lancashire (job 618), The Hexagon, Reading, Berkshire (job 520) and Bournemouth International Centre, Dorset (job 792).
Building types present in the collection include: schools, universities, colleges, company offices, housing schemes, a magistrates court, a library, an old peoples home, swimming pools, restaurants, a hospital, clubhouses, embassies, laboratories, factories, television studios, a recording studio, a market hall, entertainment complexes, a prison, council offices, houses, banks, a pier, a naval base, museums, and a health centre.
The collection comprises the following series: Project Files (RMJ01/01); Microfilm (RMJ01/02); Key Documents (RMJ01/03); Drawings (RMJ01/04); Printed Documents (RMJ01/05); Indexes (RMJ01/06); Agreements (RMJ01/07); 35mm Slides (RMJ01/08); Photograph Albums (RMJ01/09); and Microfiche (RMJ01/10). Handlists for some of these series are available.
RMJM was founded by Robert Matthew and Stirrat Johnson Marshall in 1956. The company is best known for its work on Commonwealth Institute, Kensington and Chelsea, London (1962); New Zealand House, Westminster, London (1963); University of York (from 1964); Commonwealth Pool, Edinburgh, Scotland (1970), and Scottish Parliament Building (2004, with EMBT).
The collection was acquired by the NMR in 2008.
Archive material relating to projects undertaken outside England are held by the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historic Monuments of Scotland.
