This collection of 88 photographs provides a record of railway architecture across the country in the 1950s. Coverage ranges from major city stations like St Pancras to small town stations like Battle in East Sussex, and country and suburban railways such as Etchingham, East Sussex and Box Hill, Surrey. Over 90% of the collection shows exterior views of station fronts and platform areas, but only 7 photographs record interior views.
The collection holds coverage of sites in 11 English counties. These are Bedfordshire, Derbyshire, Durham, Kent, Greater London, Northamptonshire, Northumberland, Surrey, East Sussex, Tyne and Wear and North Yorkshire.
The photographs were produced from negatives held by the Air Ministry , which became the Ministry of Defence (Air) in 1964. No other information on their provenance is known.
Each print has a former identification number issued by the Air Ministry and a short caption recording the station name and geographic location.
The collection was catalogued in detail in April 2000.
