8: Quayside Exchange
The Quayside Exchange is the white building next to the Eagle Building.
The economic boom of the 18th and early-19th centuries made Sunderland's elite recognise the need for a public building. Located in the middle of the thoroughfare between Bishopwearmouth and Old Sunderland, the Quayside Exchange would serve as the administrative centre for both settlements.
John Stokoe of Newcastle designed the building based on the plain and symmetrical exterior features of the late Georgian period. Completed in 1814 the Quayside Exchange was the Town Hall, court house, post office and market.
